Burlington, VT – A winter storm watch is in effect across Vermont and Maine, with heavy snow expected to disrupt holiday travel.
The National Weather Service (NWS) announced the watch early Wednesday morning, predicting snowfall totals exceeding 7 inches in Vermont’s Orange, Rutland, and Windsor counties. According to the NWS, the heaviest snowfall will occur at higher elevations, with snow beginning late tonight and persisting through Thursday night.
In Maine, areas including Somerset and Kennebec counties could see snow accumulation above 6 inches starting Thursday morning and lasting through Friday. Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous, with low visibility and slippery roads posing risks for holiday commuters.
Forecasters urge travelers to delay plans if possible. For those venturing out, officials recommend winterizing vehicles and packing emergency supplies, including blankets, flashlights, and water.
The holiday storm could also bring mixed precipitation to valleys, potentially reducing snow totals but increasing road hazards. Elevated regions, however, remain at risk for significant accumulation.
The latest updates advise against unnecessary travel during the storm and emphasize staying tuned to local forecasts for changes.
