Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents are preparing for significant snowfall as a Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Tuesday evening through Thursday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord is predicting heavy lake effect snow, with total accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and isolated areas receiving even higher amounts.
According to the NWS, strong winds with gusts up to 30 mph will accompany the snow, potentially leading to hazardous travel conditions. The Wednesday morning and evening commutes are expected to be particularly challenging across the region.
The affected areas include Leelanau, Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Manistee, Wexford, and Charlevoix counties. Forecasters warn that reduced visibility and slippery roads could make travel treacherous.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions, including having emergency supplies ready and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm.
The Winter Storm Watch underscores the potential severity of this early-season lake effect snowstorm, which could leave parts of Northwest Lower Michigan under a deep blanket of snow as temperatures plummet.
