Oakland, MD – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Garrett County and extreme western Allegany County, with the potential for significant ice accumulation from Saturday afternoon through late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Baltimore/Washington, up to a quarter-inch of ice could accumulate, along with minor snowfall and sleet. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, increasing the risk of widespread power outages and downed trees.
The storm is expected to begin Saturday afternoon as a mix of snow and sleet before transitioning into freezing rain. The highest ice accumulation in Garrett County is expected east of Keyser’s Ridge to Swanton. Given recent icing events, weakened trees and power lines may increase the risk of damage and outages.
The NWS warns that travel could be nearly impossible, urging residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies such as blankets, food, water, and flashlights in case of stranded conditions.
