Portland, OR – The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the South Washington Cascades and the Northern and Central Cascades of Oregon, effective from Thursday evening through Saturday afternoon.

According to the NWS, heavy snowfall is possible above 3,000 feet, with accumulations between 6 and 12 inches, and up to 15 inches above 5,000 feet. Winds could reach gusts of 40 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Snow levels are expected to start around 4,000-5,000 feet Thursday evening into Friday before dropping to 3,000-3,500 feet Friday night. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become slick and hazardous.

Officials are urging travelers to winterize vehicles and prepare emergency kits containing flashlights, batteries, blankets, a shovel, water, non-perishable food, and tire chains. Motorists should consider using snow tires and check road conditions before traveling.
