Reno, NV – A powerful winter storm is expected to blanket the Greater Lake Tahoe area with heavy snow starting today, prompting a Winter Storm Warning through Saturday night. Residents and visitors are urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and possible power outages.
According to the National Weather Service, the storm will deliver up to three feet of snow at higher elevations and two to six inches at lower altitudes. Southwest winds of up to 35 mph are expected, with ridge gusts reaching 125 mph. These conditions could lead to whiteouts and make travel along Interstate 80 and Highway 50 nearly impossible.
Officials recommend delaying travel if possible. For those who must venture out, the NWS advises carrying essential supplies such as food, water, and an emergency flashlight.
Looking ahead, a Winter Storm Watch is in place from late Sunday night through Tuesday afternoon. The second system could bring an additional one to three feet of snow above 7,000 feet, further complicating Thanksgiving travel plans.
This weekend’s storm marks the beginning of an active weather pattern, with freezing temperatures and snow expected to persist. Residents should monitor local weather updates and prepare for potential delays in holiday activities.
Stay tuned for a five-day outlook:
• Saturday: Snow showers; highs near 28°F.
• Sunday: Cloudy with late snow; highs near 30°F.
• Monday: Heavy snow; highs in the low 30s.
• Tuesday: Snow tapering off; highs near 32°F.
• Wednesday: Partly cloudy; highs near 34°F.
Stay safe and prepared as winter weather impacts the region.
