Charleston, WV – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for portions of northern West Virginia, with freezing rain and icy conditions expected to begin late tonight and continue into Sunday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of significant travel disruptions, especially in mountain areas and along critical routes like I-79 and U.S. 219.
According to the NWS Charleston office, ice accumulations could exceed 0.25 inches in higher elevations, with sleet and snow complicating conditions in central and southern mountains, including the Greenbrier Valley. Untreated roads could quickly become impassable, creating hazardous driving conditions throughout the region. Motorists are urged to avoid travel if possible and ensure vehicles are prepared with emergency supplies.
Sunday will bring widespread rain and freezing rain, with highs near 49°F in Charleston. Winds from the southeast may reach 24 mph in gusts, further increasing travel risks. Precipitation could total up to half an inch in some areas. Freezing conditions are likely to persist into Sunday night, particularly in higher elevations, as temperatures dip to around 43°F.
Looking ahead, rain showers are forecast for Monday, with a high near 44°F and calmer winds. A mix of showers and sunshine is expected Tuesday before another chance of snow and rain returns Wednesday night. Residents should monitor forecasts and exercise caution as weather conditions evolve.
