Jamestown, NY – Residents of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties should prepare for heavy snowfall as a winter storm watch takes effect Wednesday evening, lasting through late Thursday night. Snow accumulations are expected to exceed 7 inches in the hardest-hit areas, accompanied by strong winds gusting up to 50 mph.
The National Weather Service reports that today’s lake effect snow warning remains active until 7 p.m., with 4 to 8 inches of additional accumulation possible in higher elevations like the Chautauqua Ridge. Beginning Wednesday night, the storm system will intensify, bringing widespread snow and dangerous travel conditions.
Local officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this time. Narrow snow bands are likely to create rapidly changing road conditions, significantly reducing visibility. Wind gusts could also lead to downed tree branches and power outages. Anyone driving should keep an emergency kit in their vehicle and allow extra time for commutes.
The hardest-hit areas will include western Cattaraugus County and the higher terrain across Chautauqua County. The hazardous conditions could extend through Thursday night, with drifting snow potentially delaying road-clearing efforts.
By Friday, conditions are expected to improve slightly, though lingering snow showers will continue to impact visibility and travel. Stay informed by following weather updates, and consider postponing plans that require extended travel.
