Baltimore, MD – Residents across Virginia and West Virginia are preparing for a significant winter storm expected to drop up to a foot of snow by Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for areas including Western Highland County in Virginia, as well as Western Grant and Western Pendleton Counties in West Virginia. Snowfall totals are predicted to reach 6 to 12 inches in most areas, with some ridgetops potentially receiving as much as 2 feet.
Gusty winds reaching up to 50 mph may create near-blizzard conditions, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times. Travel could become treacherous, with roads, bridges, and overpasses becoming slick and hazardous. Officials warn that the storm could lead to power outages due to falling branches and wind damage.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. The storm may also bring a brief period of freezing rain or drizzle late Friday into early Saturday.
Drivers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 in their state. Authorities urge caution, as conditions may worsen through the evening commute.
