Western North Carolina – A significant winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow and ice across western North Carolina starting Friday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning, effective from 7 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, the region can expect between 2 to 8 inches of snow, with ice accumulations of about two-tenths of an inch. Affected areas include Avery, Madison, Mitchell, and Haywood counties, among others. Forecasters warn that road conditions will become treacherous, making travel hazardous throughout the event.
The storm will also impact portions of northeast Georgia, Piedmont North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina. These areas may see snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 3 inches, along with ice buildups of up to three-tenths of an inch. Friday morning and evening commutes are expected to be severely affected by icy and snow-covered roads.
Residents should prepare for potential power outages as snow and ice could bring down tree limbs and power lines. The NWS advises keeping emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights, on hand. Travelers are urged to exercise caution and monitor weather updates closely.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through the weekend, prolonging hazardous conditions. Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel and ensure their vehicles are equipped for winter emergencies.
Local authorities and utility companies are on standby to address outages and provide assistance. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
