Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for hazardous travel today as Winter Storm Blair continues to blanket the region with snow and gusty winds. A winter storm warning remains in effect until noon, with 2 to 5 inches of additional snowfall expected.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will impact areas near I-55 and eastward through early morning. Gusts up to 35 mph will create blowing and drifting snow, resulting in near-whiteout conditions, particularly in open and rural areas. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies if travel is unavoidable.
In southern Illinois, over 36,000 residents are without power due to ice-coated trees and downed power lines. Officials recommend using flashlights instead of candles and conserving fuel when using generators. Temperatures will continue to plummet, with wind chills falling into the single digits by Tuesday night.
Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring partly sunny skies but bitterly cold air, with highs near 23 degrees and winds making it feel significantly colder. By Wednesday, lows are expected to drop to 2 degrees, and wind chills could reach dangerous levels.
