Montgomery, AL – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has declared a state of emergency for 37 counties as severe winter weather approaches. The declaration, effective immediately, activates emergency resources to address potential dangers.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to bring ice, sleet, snow, and freezing rain. These conditions could cause widespread power outages, hazardous roads, and risks to public safety. The storm is forecasted to intensify early Thursday morning.

The proclamation activates the Alabama National Guard and directs state agencies to prepare for the weather event. It also enforces laws against price gouging and eases federal regulations for transporting emergency supplies.

State government offices in affected counties may close as conditions worsen. Local schools have been given authority to determine closures based on safety concerns.

The affected counties include Madison, Jefferson, Limestone, Morgan, and others in northern Alabama. Residents are advised to stock up on essentials, charge devices, and monitor local updates.

Transportation agencies are expediting permits for vehicles delivering storm-related supplies and equipment. Oversize loads are required to comply with state safety regulations.
