Chicago, IL – Millions across the Midwest and East Coast, including Maryland, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, are facing the aftermath of heavy snowfall as an Arctic blast sweeps across the nation, bringing subzero temperatures and raising concerns about frozen pipes.
According to the National Weather Service, parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland received up to 6 inches of snow, while strong winds caused drifting and hazardous road conditions. With temperatures now plummeting, wind chills in the Midwest are expected to fall as low as -40°F in some areas, and between -10°F and -20°F in the Great Lakes and eastern states.
As freezing temperatures settle in, experts warn about the risks of frozen pipes, especially as a nationwide plumber shortage could leave homeowners waiting longer for assistance. Residents are urged to insulate pipes, let faucets drip, and seal drafts to prevent pipe bursts and water damage during the prolonged cold.
Officials caution that the Arctic air is expected to remain through early next week, compounding risks for frostbite, hypothermia, and power outages. Travel disruptions are also likely due to icy conditions lingering from the earlier snowfall.
