Winnipeg, MB – A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a shooting that left a woman critically injured early Sunday morning in Winnipeg’s Wellington Crescent area.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers arrested Machuor Machar Akau around 1:41 p.m. on November 3, 2025, in the Southdale neighborhood. Akau was wanted for aggravated assault involving a firearm related to an incident on November 2 in the McMillan area.

Investigators say the shooting occurred shortly after 2:15 a.m. inside an apartment in the 200 block of Wellington Crescent, where Akau allegedly became involved in an altercation with his 25-year-old girlfriend. During the dispute, he allegedly produced a handgun that discharged, striking her at close range.

The woman managed to escape the residence and alert nearby Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members, who provided emergency care. She was transported to a hospital in critical condition with what police describe as a life-altering injury and remains hospitalized.

Akau allegedly fled before police arrived. A warrant was issued, and he was later arrested without incident near Fermor Avenue and Beaverhill Road. He has since been charged with Aggravated Assault and remains in custody.

Police urge anyone facing intimate partner violence to seek help by calling 911, WPS Victim Services (204-986-6350), or Ikwe Widdjiitiwin (1-800-362-3344).
