According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, December featured periods of both above- and below-normal temperatures, with several sharp swings throughout the month. Temperature graphics showed repeated warmups followed by colder air, contributing to changing precipitation types during multiple systems.
Precipitation was a consistent feature. Rainfall totals for the month were above normal in many locations, with several widespread rain events contributing to rising rivers and saturated ground conditions late in the month. Snowfall and wintry precipitation occurred during colder periods, particularly during early- and mid-month systems.
The summary highlighted several notable winter weather events, including impactful snow and mixed precipitation episodes on December 2 and December 13. These events led to travel disruptions across parts of southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southeast Indiana.
Severe weather also affected the region late in the month. On December 29, thunderstorms produced damaging winds, with multiple wind reports documented by the Storm Prediction Center across the Wilmington forecast area.
Outlooks included in the summary showed a transition toward colder conditions entering January, with temperature and precipitation outlooks indicating continued active weather patterns.
