Wilmington, North Carolina – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday for portions of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina as snow and very cold temperatures continue to create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Wilmington office, snow from Sunday and Sunday night remains on road surfaces, and temperatures below freezing early Monday are preventing melting. While no additional snowfall is expected, lingering snow combined with cold pavement temperatures will continue to produce slick and icy conditions through the morning hours.

The advisory includes communities across Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick counties in North Carolina, as well as Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Williamsburg, Horry, and Georgetown counties in South Carolina. Impacted cities include Wilmington, Jacksonville, Lumberton, Whiteville, Florence, Conway, Myrtle Beach, and Georgetown.

Major travel routes potentially affected include Interstate 40 near Wilmington, Interstate 95 through Dillon and Florence, U.S. Highway 17 along the coast, and U.S. Highway 74 across inland areas. The National Weather Service notes that bridges and overpasses are especially prone to icing, even where nearby roads appear improved.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should also exercise caution, as sidewalks, driveways, and stairways may be icy and slippery, increasing the risk of falls.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late Monday morning as temperatures rise above freezing, though isolated slick spots may linger longer in shaded or less-traveled areas.

This advisory may be especially impactful for morning commuters, school transportation routes, emergency responders, and coastal travelers during the early hours of the day.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local road conditions, use caution when traveling, and continue checking updates from the National Weather Service as the advisory expires later this morning.
