Peotone, IL – Several animals tragically perished Monday night as firefighters braved frigid conditions to extinguish a massive barn fire in rural Will County.

The Manhattan Fire Protection District (MFPD) responded around 6:50 p.m. to reports of a fully involved barn fire on the 4000 block of Church Road in Peotone. Arriving crews found the 50-by-70-foot structure engulfed in flames, with temperatures hovering near freezing.

According to MFPD officials, firefighters quickly established a rural water supply and launched an aggressive fire attack. Despite their efforts to protect nearby structures and save livestock, some animals could not be rescued from the blaze.

Fire crews managed to contain the fire within 60 minutes, preventing its spread to other buildings. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters.

The bitter cold added challenges to the response, with icy conditions complicating water operations and firefighter safety. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
