Wichita, Kansas – A powerful cold front sweeping across Kansas on Sunday will bring very strong winds, falling temperatures, and scattered snow showers, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, northwest wind gusts between 55 and 70 mph are expected across much of central and south-central Kansas from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. A High Wind Warning is in effect for parts of central Kansas, while surrounding areas remain under a Wind Advisory.

Cities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Great Bend, and Emporia could experience damaging wind gusts capable of blowing around loose objects and producing blowing dust with reduced visibility. Travel may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on highways such as I-35, I-135, and U.S. Highway 54.

Temperatures will also drop quickly behind the cold front. Morning readings in the 50s and low 60s will fall into the upper 30s by late afternoon, with colder air continuing to move in Sunday night.

Forecasters say scattered snow showers may develop Sunday afternoon and evening, particularly across northeast Kansas, where a light dusting up to half an inch is possible. Brief visibility reductions and slick spots on bridges and overpasses could occur.

By early Monday morning, the cold air combined with lingering winds may bring wind chills near zero, especially across Russell, Salina, Emporia, and surrounding areas.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, use caution while driving in strong crosswinds, and dress in layers if spending time outdoors as the colder air arrives.
