Buffalo, N.Y. – Strong thunderstorms capable of producing 60 mph winds and heavy downpours could sweep across western New York this afternoon through 10 p.m., raising the risk of flash flooding, downed trees, and power outages across several counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk is in effect for the region from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, with a concurrent Flood Watch lasting until 2 a.m. Tuesday. The greatest threats include isolated severe wind gusts and localized rainfall totals high enough to cause urban and small stream flooding.

Storms are expected to form ahead of a strong cold front moving into the region. Areas including Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Genesee, and the Finger Lakes should be alert for fast-moving cells capable of triggering flash floods and damaging wind. Emergency managers advise residents to avoid flooded roads, secure outdoor items, and stay indoors if thunder roars.

Multiple rounds of storms may impact evening travel and could disrupt power in affected zones. This setup is typical of early summer storm patterns fueled by warm, humid air clashing with cooler air aloft.

Flood and severe weather alerts remain in effect through tonight, and additional warnings could be issued with little notice.
