Buffalo, NY – A powerful lake-effect snowstorm is sweeping across western and central New York, with some areas expected to see up to 2 feet of accumulation by Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, the Lake Effect Snow Warning will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for multiple counties, including Northern Cayuga, Oswego, and Lewis. These regions are bracing for 1 to 2 feet of additional snowfall, with the heaviest accumulation anticipated in central and southern Oswego County and southern Lewis County.

Strong winds gusting up to 45 mph are expected to exacerbate conditions, causing significant blowing and drifting snow and periods of near-whiteout visibility.

Travel is likely to be extremely hazardous across the region, particularly in areas experiencing the most persistent snowfall. “Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and poor visibility,” the NWS said.

Elsewhere, Wayne County could see up to 18 inches of snow, while southern Erie, Wyoming, and Cattaraugus counties are forecasted to receive 4 to 7 inches, primarily in higher elevations.

The storm has also raised concerns about potential power outages as winds are expected to down tree branches. Residents are urged to stay informed and exercise caution if travel is unavoidable.
