Buffalo, NY – Strong winds and the potential for severe thunderstorms are expected across Western New York today as a powerful cold front moves through the region. Residents should prepare for damaging wind gusts and the possibility of localized severe weather throughout the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for several counties, with gusts reaching up to 58 mph in areas such as Dunkirk and Springville. Winds are expected to be strongest in favored downslope areas south of Buffalo and Rochester and east of Lake Ontario. The strongest winds will occur between midday and early evening before gradually weakening overnight.
In addition to strong winds, a line of thunderstorms is forecasted to move west to east through the region. The NWS has issued a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms across much of Western New York, with a Slight Risk in the far southwestern portion of the state. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts, with an isolated tornado not completely ruled out in southwestern areas.
