Buffalo, N.Y. – Residents across western and central New York are experiencing a rare burst of summer warmth, with temperatures soaring into the upper 70s and near 80 degrees from Buffalo to Rochester and as far east as Syracuse.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, this warm spell is pushing highs nearly 20 degrees above average for late April, with most cities in western New York reaching between 75°F and 81°F today. Buffalo is expected to top out around 75°F, while Jamestown, Wellsville, and Erie, Pa., may climb to 80°F by mid-afternoon.

These unusually warm conditions are impacting daily routines, as schools and workplaces encourage residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Urban centers including Rochester, Canandaigua, and Batavia are all set for highs in the upper 70s, while even lakeside communities such as Oswego and Watertown will see temperatures climb into the upper 60s.

Travelers should be mindful of increased pedestrian and cyclist traffic as many take advantage of the unexpected warmth. Those with respiratory concerns should also monitor air quality alerts, which may be issued if ozone levels rise.

This early taste of summer is expected to continue through Thursday evening, with temperatures gradually returning to seasonal norms by Friday. Additional updates will be issued if any advisories are posted.
