Grand Rapids, MI – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for southwest and west-central Michigan until 10 a.m. Saturday. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected overnight, bringing event totals to 3 to 7 inches.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Mason, Lake, Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon, Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren, and Kalamazoo counties. The lake effect snow will produce rapid changes in visibility and road conditions, particularly near bands of heavy snow.

According to the National Weather Service, travel will be hazardous in affected areas. Roads are expected to remain slick, and visibility may drop drastically in short distances. Drivers are advised to slow down and exercise caution.

The advisory also affects northern and southern Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties in southwest Michigan. Snowfall in these areas could add up to an additional 2 inches overnight. Total event accumulations may reach up to 5 inches in localized spots.

Forecasters warn that lake effect snow can vary greatly over short distances. Some areas may experience heavy snowfall, while others see dry conditions just a few miles away.

Residents are urged to monitor road conditions and prepare for sudden weather changes. For the latest updates, call 511 or visit the National Weather Service website.

Be prepared for a slow commute this morning as snow tapers off by late morning. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, maintaining hazardous conditions through the weekend.
