Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers across western and central Michigan face a narrow but hazardous window this morning as patchy ice forms on roads, especially bridges and overpasses, threatening the early commute through mid-morning Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, spotty light rain before sunrise is creating sporadic ice accumulation across more than 20 counties, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Ingham, and Kalamazoo. Temperatures hovering near freezing are allowing thin, hard-to-see ice to develop, particularly on elevated surfaces like I-96, US-131, and I-94 corridors.

In Grand Rapids, icy patches could linger on secondary roads and ramps through at least 9 to 10 a.m., while Lansing and Jackson may see similar conditions on untreated surfaces. Along the lakeshore, including Muskegon and Holland, fluctuating temperatures could create inconsistent road conditions block by block.

State and local agencies urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Bridges and shaded roadways pose the highest risk. Commuters should allow extra travel time and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Temperatures are expected to rise steadily after sunrise, helping eliminate icy spots by late morning. Additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen during the commute.
