Grand Rapids, MI – Western Michigan is bracing for a wintry mix of rain and snow beginning Monday night, potentially disrupting holiday travel along major routes such as I-96. The National Weather Service warns that freezing rain could create icy road conditions, making commutes hazardous through Monday evening into early Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will start Monday afternoon as light snow and transition to freezing rain by evening. Temperatures are expected to hover near 30°F, increasing the likelihood of ice accumulation on untreated surfaces. Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and carry emergency kits in their vehicles.

Monday’s forecast predicts daytime highs near 36°F with gusty southeast winds reaching up to 20 mph. The combination of wind and icy precipitation could result in reduced visibility and slick conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. By Monday night, freezing rain and sleet may accumulate up to a quarter inch before transitioning back to light snow.

Looking ahead, Tuesday will bring drier conditions with mostly cloudy skies and highs near 36°F. Christmas Day on Wednesday is forecasted to be mostly cloudy with temperatures climbing to 37°F, offering a brief break from the active weather. However, another system on Thursday could bring rain showers and warmer highs near 40°F.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential delays or cancellations. Stay informed about changing road conditions by checking local travel advisories and using caution during early-morning commutes this week.
