Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of West Michigan starting Thursday evening, as forecasters predict significant snowfall that could impact travel through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 7 inches, with localized areas under intense lake-effect snow bands potentially exceeding 7 inches. The advisory affects several counties, including Mason, Lake, Osceola, Newaygo, Oceana, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Allegan, Barry, Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Eaton, Calhoun, and Jackson.

The advisory begins at 7 p.m. Thursday for most areas and at 10 p.m. for Eaton, Calhoun, and Jackson counties, remaining in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday. Travel conditions are anticipated to become hazardous, with slippery roads affecting both Friday morning and evening commutes. The heaviest snowfall rates, up to 1 inch per hour, may occur in areas along the lake-effect snow bands.

Residents are urged to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time. The NWS advises keeping an emergency kit in vehicles and staying updated on weather changes throughout the event.
