Western Kentucky – A significant ice storm is set to hit western Kentucky starting early Sunday, bringing hazardous road conditions, power outages, and frigid temperatures. Residents should prepare for severe impacts through Monday morning.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued an Ice Storm Warning from 2 a.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Monday. Ice accumulations between a quarter and three-quarters of an inch are expected, with additional snow and sleet up to two inches. Key travel routes, including I-24 and U.S. 60, are likely to become treacherous as freezing rain coats roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Authorities strongly discourage travel during the storm. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should keep an emergency kit in their vehicles, including water, food, and a flashlight. Local officials also urge residents to prepare for possible long-term power outages caused by ice-laden tree limbs and power lines.

An arctic air mass will follow the storm, bringing dangerously low wind chills by Monday night. Temperatures could feel like the single digits or below zero, creating additional risks for those without heat or adequate shelter.

Residents should stock up on essentials, charge mobile devices, and check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with medical needs. Avoid downed power lines, and report outages to your utility provider.
