Colby, Kan. – Western Kansas is under threat from severe storms Friday evening, with forecasters warning of large hail, damaging winds, and a possible tornado.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 313 remains in effect until 9 p.m. MDT. The alert includes 11 counties, among them Cheyenne, Sherman, Thomas, and Wallace. Hail up to 3 inches wide and gusts to 70 mph are possible in areas from Goodland to Leoti.
Storms are expected to intensify after 4 p.m., particularly along U.S. Route 83 and I-70, where isolated cells may produce funnel clouds or brief tornadoes. Emergency management advises residents to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
Farmers and ranchers should take precautions as hail may damage crops and threaten livestock. Local law enforcement may close certain roads if conditions worsen.
The severe threat should taper after sunset, but residents are urged to remain weather-aware throughout the evening. Updated warnings or alerts may follow if storm activity continues to develop.
