GRAND JUNCTION, CO – A dangerous arctic air mass has settled over western Colorado, bringing life-threatening cold to the region Monday night. Low temperatures could drop to -41°F in Gunnison, with widespread subzero readings across the mountains and valleys. The National Weather Service has issued Extreme Cold Warnings and Advisories across western Colorado.

According to the National Weather Service, Gunnison, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs will experience some of the coldest conditions, with lows nearing -40°F. Even milder areas like Grand Junction and Moab will see temperatures drop to the single digits. Extreme wind chills, as low as -50°F, are expected in some mountain areas, making frostbite possible in minutes. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor exposure, check on vulnerable neighbors, and protect pipes.

Looking Ahead:

Temperatures will slowly recover this week. By Tuesday night, Gunnison’s low is forecast to improve to -21°F, with Grand Junction reaching 8°F. Daytime highs will remain cold, staying in the low 30s for most areas through Thursday. A gradual warming trend is expected by Friday, with sunny conditions and highs nearing 40°F in Grand Junction.

For drivers, icy conditions are likely, particularly along Interstate 70 and Highway 50. Officials recommend carrying emergency supplies if traveling is necessary. Residents should stay weather-aware and follow updates from local authorities.
