A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for parts of southern West Virginia early Thursday, with light snowfall and gusty winds expected to impact the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia, the advisory continues until 10 a.m. EST for Mercer, Summers, and eastern Greenbrier counties. Communities included in the advisory area include Bluefield, Hinton, Lewisburg, Alderson, Flat Top, White Sulphur Springs, and surrounding areas.
Forecasters expect additional snow accumulations of up to two inches through mid-morning. While snowfall totals are modest, wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph may contribute to blowing snow and reduced visibility in exposed areas.
The National Weather Service cautioned that road conditions may become slippery, particularly on untreated secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. Even small amounts of snow combined with gusty winds can lead to hazardous travel during the early hours of the day.
Officials warned that the hazardous conditions could affect the Thursday morning commute, especially for drivers traveling before temperatures rise later in the morning. Icy patches may also develop on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra following distance, and use caution when traveling. Pedestrians are advised to watch their footing when heading outdoors, as surfaces may be icy and difficult to see under light snow.
The National Weather Service recommends checking the latest road conditions by calling 511 before traveling and remaining alert for changing conditions until the advisory expires later this morning.
