Charleston, WV – A winter storm gripping much of West Virginia is creating dangerous travel conditions with freezing rain and snow continuing through Tuesday. The National Weather Service reports that icy roads, power outages, and hazardous walkways are expected across the region today.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain this morning will transition to snow by early afternoon as colder air moves into the state. Ice accumulation could reach up to 0.4 inches in some areas, while an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast. Wet roads will likely refreeze overnight as temperatures drop to the teens, making travel conditions worse.

Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially along interstates and major roadways like I-64 and I-77, where icy conditions could cause accidents. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, blankets, and water. Power outages are already reported in some parts of the state due to ice-covered tree branches breaking and impacting power lines.

The winter storm warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday for much of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, and central and western West Virginia. By Tuesday morning, upslope snow will persist in the mountains, while other areas will experience drier weather.

Looking ahead, temperatures will remain cold throughout the week, with highs near 10 degrees by Wednesday. A slight chance of snow showers is forecast for midweek, but conditions should improve by Thursday as sunshine returns.
