Charleston, WV – A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and hazardous conditions across portions of West Virginia and southwest Virginia, with snowfall totals ranging from 2 to 8 inches. Gusty winds up to 35 mph are compounding the dangers, especially for travelers.

According to the National Weather Service, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. Monday. Areas such as Taylor, Upshur, Barbour, and Kanawha counties are among those seeing the heaviest snowfall, with higher elevations like Snowshoe potentially reaching the 8-inch mark.

As temperatures drop overnight, the risk of a flash freeze increases, rendering ice melt agents ineffective. Travel is expected to be treacherous, especially during the Monday morning commute.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If driving is unavoidable, carry emergency supplies such as a flashlight, food, and water. Motorists can check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting their state’s online traffic portal.

Further updates, including safety tips and local impacts, are available through the National Weather Service’s website and social media platforms.
