Charleston, WV – Rain is set to arrive across West Virginia Wednesday night, creating potentially slick roads for Thanksgiving travelers. Cooler temperatures and snow showers are expected to follow into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, light rain will develop Wednesday evening, intensifying overnight. Travelers along I-77 and I-64 should prepare for wet conditions with possible reduced visibility. Thanksgiving morning will likely see lingering rain showers, which may transition into isolated snow in higher elevations by evening.
Thanksgiving Day will bring highs near 40°F, with mountain areas dipping into the low 30s. Winds may add to the chill, so those attending outdoor gatherings should bundle up. Dry weather returns briefly Friday, with highs around 37°F in Charleston, but overnight lows will plummet to the 20s, increasing the risk of icy patches.
Heading into the weekend, snow showers are forecast Saturday night into Sunday, primarily in mountain regions and along major highways like I-68. Lowland areas could see flurries with temperatures in the mid-30s during the day and teens overnight. Drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling, especially at higher elevations, where snowfall may accumulate.
The NWS also warns of upslope snow showers continuing into Monday, with temperatures in the 20s in the mountains and low 30s in Charleston. Sunshine is expected to break through Monday afternoon, offering a temporary reprieve from the cold.
Residents should monitor forecasts closely and prepare for fluctuating conditions throughout the holiday weekend. If driving, ensure vehicles are winter-ready, with adequate tires and emergency kits packed.
