Charleston, WV – The early-December Arctic blast that dropped temperatures across Appalachia will continue into next week, keeping West Virginia locked in a wintry pattern through December 9–15, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 8–14 Day Outlook, issued December 1.

Forecasters expect below-normal temperatures to dominate the Mountain State as Arctic air lingers over the Northeast and Ohio Valley. Highs will generally stay in the low to mid-30s, with nighttime lows in the 20s or teens in higher elevations.

The forecast also calls for above-normal precipitation, meaning periodic snow showers and wintry mixes could return, particularly over the Allegheny Highlands and northern counties. Charleston, Morgantown, and Elkins may all see flurries or light accumulations midweek, with the potential for icy conditions on mountain passes.

Meanwhile, much of the western U.S. and southern states — including California, Texas, and Arizona — will trend much warmer and drier than normal, marking a sharp east-west contrast. For West Virginia, however, winter continues to take hold, with Arctic chill and active weather likely through mid-month.

Any brief warm-up later in December will likely be short-lived as more cold air could return closer to the holidays.
