Elkins, WV – The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Wind Advisory for portions of the West Virginia highlands, where strong winds are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into early Thursday.

The advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 1 a.m. Thursday, impacting northwest and southeast Pocahontas County and southeast Randolph County, including Snowshoe, Marlinton, and Harman.

Forecasters predict west winds between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, strongest along ridges and exposed high terrain. These gusty conditions could knock down tree limbs, cause minor structural damage, and lead to isolated power outages.

Residents and travelers in mountain communities should secure outdoor items, use caution while driving, and be alert for fallen branches or debris on roadways. Winds are expected to ease early Thursday morning as the weather system exits the region.
