Charleston, WV – Drivers and residents across West Virginia should prepare for a wet evening and a risk of brief flooding, as widespread rain spreads across the state through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a broad area of rain will cover much of West Virginia this afternoon and evening, with embedded thunderstorms possible. Rain totals between half an inch and one inch are expected statewide, but isolated storms could bring locally heavier downpours, especially in urban areas and low-lying trouble spots. Minor flooding may occur on roads in Kanawha, Cabell, and Putnam counties, with Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley likely to see the heaviest rainfall.

Travelers are urged to watch for water pooling on highways, particularly near underpasses and in areas prone to drainage issues. Emergency officials recommend avoiding flooded roads and turning around if water covers your route. Residents should also check that drains and gutters are clear to reduce the chance of localized flooding.

Heavier rain will taper off overnight, but occasional showers may linger into Saturday morning. More weather advisories could be issued if thunderstorms intensify or flooding increases. Stay alert for updates and remember: Turn around, don’t drown.
