Charleston, WV – Astronomical winter officially begins today across West Virginia, and the season is arriving with a noticeable cool-down and dry conditions following the passage of a cold front overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, high pressure is building into the region today, allowing dry weather and sunshine to dominate much of the Mountain State. The cold front that moved through early Sunday morning has ushered in cooler air, setting the tone for the first full day of winter.
High temperatures today are expected to reach around 42 degrees in Charleston and Huntington, 38 degrees in Parkersburg and Clarksburg, 39 degrees in Elkins, and 41 degrees in Beckley. These readings are seasonable for late December, though cooler than recent days.
The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year, with daylight hours beginning to gradually increase starting Monday. Despite the limited daylight, conditions today will remain calm, with light winds and no precipitation expected.
The dry weather should support good travel conditions across much of the region, including along Interstate 64, Interstate 77, and Interstate 79. While roads remain clear, motorists are advised to watch for colder temperatures overnight, which could allow for isolated slick spots in sheltered areas.
Residents across Kanawha County, Cabell County, Wood County, Harrison County, and surrounding areas are encouraged to dress warmly and take note of the seasonal shift as winter officially begins.
