Charleston, West Virginia – Drivers across southeast Ohio and West Virginia could face water-covered roads and slick commutes starting Friday as spring thunderstorms roll in, triggering a weather alert across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, heavy rain is likely between Friday morning and Friday night, with thunderstorms developing after 11 a.m. and intensifying into the evening. Up to an inch of rain is possible in some areas, with localized flooding risks near low-lying roads including stretches of Interstate 64 around Charleston and areas along the Kanawha River.

Rainfall totals will vary, but spot flooding is possible Friday evening and could linger into early Saturday, especially where thunderstorms repeatedly hit the same areas. The highest storm chances and rainfall amounts are expected Friday night, with 90% precipitation probability. Winds will be breezy from the south at 6 mph.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, especially after dark. Prepare now by clearing gutters, securing outdoor items, and keeping devices charged in case of brief outages.
