Charleston, WV – A significant winter storm is set to impact West Virginia this week, with heavy snow, rain, and gusty winds threatening travel conditions. Accumulating snow is expected Thursday evening into Friday morning, especially in the northeast mountains, where elevations above 3,500 feet could see up to 8 inches.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a cold front arriving Wednesday will bring rain to lower elevations, transitioning to snow in mountainous areas by Thursday. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening, with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible in lowlands and 4 to 8 inches in higher elevations. Gusts of up to 25 mph could reduce visibility and create dangerous travel conditions, especially along I-79 and mountain routes.

Rain will dominate Wednesday and early Thursday across Charleston, with highs near 67 degrees before colder air arrives. By Thursday night, temperatures will dip into the low 30s, leading to snow showers overnight. Drivers should exercise caution, especially during the morning and evening commutes when visibility may be reduced.

The extended forecast shows a mix of rain and snow continuing into Friday, with highs near 43 degrees. Saturday will remain cloudy, with scattered snow showers expected to persist before tapering off by evening. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and prepare for possible delays.

This week’s storm marks the season’s first significant snowfall for much of the region, emphasizing the need for winter weather preparedness.
