Charleston, WV – Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms will return to Charleston and surrounding West Virginia counties starting Sunday, potentially disrupting weekend travel and early workweek plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the region will see rising temperatures near 80°F on Saturday before storm conditions develop late Sunday morning. Winds may gust up to 23 mph, and the chance of thunderstorms increases to 80% by Sunday afternoon, bringing the risk of brief downpours and isolated flash flooding.

Showers are expected to intensify Sunday evening and continue through Monday, especially along major routes like US-60 and I-64, where visibility may be reduced and ponding could occur. Residents are urged to monitor local alerts and avoid low-lying areas during periods of heavy rain.

The Hazardous Weather Outlook covers northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and much of central and southern West Virginia. While Friday night into Saturday looks mostly dry and warm, meteorologists warn of a sharp shift in conditions heading into Sunday and Monday.
