Charleston, West Virginia – Daily rounds of showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected to drench West Virginia through Saturday, keeping temperatures near or below seasonal norms and making for a soggy end to May.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, periods of rain and storms will continue today, with mountain highs in the 50s and 60s and lowlands reaching the 70s. Thursday brings more clouds and afternoon showers, with lowland temperatures peaking in the low 80s. Storm chances persist Friday and Saturday, with highs remaining consistent—mountains in the 50s and 60s, lowlands in the 60s to 70s.

Communities from Beckley to Morgantown should prepare for slippery roads during peak travel hours, especially in areas prone to runoff or minor flooding. Outdoor plans, including youth sports, should have indoor backups. Mountain routes like U.S. 33 and I-64 near Lewisburg may see reduced visibility during heavier downpours.

Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid driving through water-covered roads. Lightning remains a risk during afternoon storms, particularly in open areas and near lakes.

A gradual drying trend is expected by early next week as June begins, with the potential for warmer and more stable weather returning to the region.
