Charleston, WV — Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across western and northern West Virginia early Thursday, with high winds and the possibility of isolated tornadoes keeping emergency officials and residents on alert overnight.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 7 a.m. EDT for counties including Cabell, Wayne, Monongalia, and Ohio. The storms, which originated in western Ohio, are moving eastward quickly and pose a risk of damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph and potential tornado development in some areas.

Communities in Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, and Wheeling are expected to experience the brunt of the system before sunrise. Local emergency management agencies are advising residents to charge electronic devices, secure outdoor belongings, and stay indoors until the watch expires.

High winds may result in downed power lines, tree damage, and isolated flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and near rivers. Travel on Interstate 64 and Interstate 79 could be hazardous due to sudden wind gusts and reduced visibility.

April thunderstorms are not uncommon in West Virginia, but the speed and intensity of this system make it especially dangerous for early morning travelers and communities in its path.
