Charleston, WV – West Virginia residents should prepare for another round of heavy rain this weekend, with flood warnings in place for Kanawha County and surrounding areas. Officials warn that rising water levels in the Elk River could lead to road closures and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a flood warning remains in effect for the Elk River at Queen Shoals, impacting parts of Kanawha County. As of Thursday night, the river level reached 19.7 feet and is expected to crest at 20.5 feet by midnight before gradually receding. Flooding could impact low-lying roads, including sections of U.S. Route 119 and Beech Street.

The forecast calls for periods of rain starting Friday night, with a 90% chance of precipitation on Saturday. Thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon, accompanied by gusty winds up to 24 mph. Rain will persist into Sunday before tapering off Monday.

Motorists should use extreme caution and avoid flooded roads. Authorities urge residents to stay informed through local weather alerts and report any flooding to emergency services. The next NWS update is expected Friday at 8 a.m. EST.
