Charleston, West Virginia – Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding across West Virginia on Friday, with rainfall chances nearing 100% in parts of the state from morning through evening. Cities like Beckley, Clarksburg, and Logan may see street flooding and waterlogged roads by midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, precipitation chances rise sharply after midnight Thursday, peaking between 75% and 95% across most of southern and central West Virginia from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. A marginal flood risk—defined as at least a 5% chance of excessive rainfall—covers much of the state, including Charleston, Huntington, and Elkins.

Road conditions may quickly deteriorate along US-19, I-64, and rural mountain routes, especially in counties like Raleigh, Kanawha, and Nicholas. With already saturated soil from earlier rain this week, runoff could increase the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and near creeks and streams.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways, secure outdoor items, and monitor local alerts. Charge mobile devices and check for updated school or work notifications Friday morning.

Rain chances taper Friday night, but additional advisories could follow if rainfall totals increase. Stay alert through weather.gov/rlx for real-time updates.
