Charleston, WV – A major winter storm is set to impact southern West Virginia, with heavy snow accumulations expected to disrupt travel. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning for McDowell and Wyoming counties, effective from 1 p.m. Friday until 4 p.m. Saturday. Forecasts predict snow totals of 4 to 7 inches across affected areas.

According to the NWS, hazardous road conditions will likely impact Friday’s evening commute. The warning advises residents to prepare for slippery roads and limited visibility during the storm. Motorists are urged to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.

Additional warnings extend to nearby counties, including Raleigh, Fayette, and Nicholas, with similar snow totals expected. Areas such as Beckley, Summersville, and Fayetteville may see accumulations up to 7 inches. Snowfall is expected to intensify Friday afternoon and continue steadily into Saturday evening.

Virginia counties Dickenson and Buchanan, under a separate Winter Storm Warning, are also bracing for 3 to 6 inches of snow starting Friday morning. Travelers should remain cautious as conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day.

Officials recommend monitoring local road updates via 511 services and following NWS social media channels for timely information. Preparations should be completed before snow begins to fall, as road crews may face delays keeping up with the storm’s intensity.
