Charleston, West Virginia – Clear skies and calm winds in West Virginia tonight are creating perfect conditions for a rare June sight: the aurora borealis. Charleston residents could catch a glimpse of the northern lights late Sunday night into early Monday morning — an extremely unusual event this far south.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a strong geomagnetic storm is making the aurora visible as far south as Alabama. With mostly clear skies overnight and visibility extending 10 miles, parts of the Mountain State — including Charleston and nearby towns like Nitro and Elkview — could enjoy a colorful atmospheric show before sunrise Monday.

But the real summer heat builds Monday, June 2. Expect sunny skies, calm winds, and a high near 87°F by afternoon. Light haze from Canadian wildfire smoke may return, especially in higher elevations. While air quality hasn’t triggered official alerts, sensitive groups should limit prolonged outdoor exposure.

By Tuesday, temperatures rise even further, hitting 91°F under sunny skies. Humidity will remain moderate, though locals are advised to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable neighbors. No rain is expected until Thursday night, when scattered thunderstorms and showers may break the dry streak.

Extended Outlook:

  • Monday: Sunny, high 87°F
  • Tuesday: Sunny, high 91°F
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high 91°F
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, high 90°F
  • Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, high near 82°F
