Elkins, W.Va. – Gardeners across the West Virginia highlands should brace for an unseasonably cold night as a frost advisory takes effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday, with temperatures dropping as low as 34 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the advisory includes Southeast Nicholas, Southeast Webster, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties—impacting cities such as Elkins, Marlinton, Snowshoe, Harman, and Richwood. Sensitive outdoor vegetation may be damaged or killed if left uncovered overnight.

Residents in elevated and rural areas are especially at risk, with calm winds and clear skies creating optimal frost conditions. Officials recommend covering garden plants, moving potted flowers indoors, and avoiding early morning planting activity.

This frost advisory is rare for June but not unprecedented in the mountain regions. Similar cold snaps have occurred in early summer during previous years, often following unusually mild springs.

The advisory is expected to expire by 8 a.m. Monday as temperatures rebound quickly after sunrise. More seasonal warmth is expected later in the week, but additional advisories are possible if clear skies and calm nights persist.
