Charleston, West Virginia – Gardeners in Randolph and Pocahontas counties should take immediate action tonight as temperatures drop into the mid-30s, prompting a frost advisory from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday across portions of the West Virginia highlands.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, areas including Snowshoe, Marlinton, Elkins, and Richwood could dip as low as 34°F overnight, with frost likely to develop on exposed surfaces. The advisory covers Southeast Nicholas, Southeast Webster, both sections of Pocahontas, and Randolph counties.

Sensitive vegetation and unprotected plants may be damaged or killed by early morning frost. Residents are urged to cover outdoor plants, bring potted flowers inside, and avoid planting new vegetation until conditions warm. Those living in higher elevations like Snowshoe and Harman are especially at risk due to their colder microclimates.

This cold snap is unusual for June but not unprecedented in West Virginia’s mountainous terrain. Local agricultural groups recommend monitoring temperatures and checking gardens again after sunrise.

Warnings remain in effect through 8 a.m. Monday. More updates may follow if temperatures drop further or new advisories are issued.
