Charleston, WV – Residents in Charleston and surrounding mountain areas are urged to prepare for freezing rain and potential icy conditions early Thursday morning. With temperatures expected to drop to freezing or below in higher elevations, isolated patches of ice could develop on roads, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning will be in effect from 4 a.m. to noon on Thursday. While significant accumulation of ice is not anticipated, drivers along mountain peaks and ridges should remain cautious. Temperatures in the lowlands are expected to stay in the upper 30s to low 40s, but higher altitudes could see icy patches, particularly near shaded or exposed areas.

Tonight’s forecast anticipates lows around 41°F with increasing cloud cover, and showers likely after 2 a.m. Southeast winds may reach up to 11 mph, adding to the chill. The weather service advises drivers to monitor road conditions and avoid sudden braking, especially along winding routes commonly affected by freezing rain.

Looking ahead, showers are expected to continue into Thursday, with highs near 54°F. Rainfall amounts between three-quarters and one inch are possible, which could further contribute to slick conditions. By Thursday night, temperatures will drop to around 45°F, with rain tapering off after midnight.

The extended forecast for Charleston shows a mix of conditions over the next few days. Friday will bring mostly cloudy skies with a high near 56°F, while Saturday and Sunday promise sunny intervals with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. Mornings and nights, however, will remain chilly, so residents should keep jackets and rain gear handy as fluctuating conditions persist.
