Charleston, West Virginia – A surge of heavy rain on Friday threatens flash flooding across much of West Virginia, with areas like Beckley, Clarksburg, and Huntington under a “Slight Risk” for excessive rainfall through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a low pressure system will move through the state Friday afternoon into the evening, bringing the potential for thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail. Flood-prone areas, especially near creeks and streams, are at risk for rapid water rise.

Cities including Sutton, Snowshoe, and Elkins could see intense downpours leading to localized flooding during the evening commute. The agency warns that runoff could impact low-lying roads and drainage systems, especially in central and southern parts of the state.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads, keep phones charged in case of power outages, and monitor weather alerts closely throughout the day. This marks one of the more widespread rain threats since early spring, with saturated ground increasing the chance for flash flooding.

Warnings remain in effect through Friday night, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
