Charleston, WV – Rain and a cold front will dominate West Virginia’s weather this week, bringing snow to higher elevations by Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns residents to prepare for slippery roads and strong winds as temperatures drop dramatically midweek.
According to the NWS, rain will begin Tuesday and persist through Wednesday. A sharp cold front will bring a mix of rain and snow Thursday, particularly affecting mountainous regions. Lowland areas, including Charleston, will primarily see rain, but snow remains possible in some spots as temperatures plunge to the 30s. Winds are expected to strengthen Wednesday, reaching 25-30 mph in the lowlands and 30-40 mph in the mountains, creating hazardous travel conditions along I-64 and other major routes.
By Thursday, highs will hover around 42°F with overnight lows dipping near freezing. Friday will see continued snow and rain showers, with temperatures struggling to reach 40°F. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel in areas impacted by strong winds and potential snowfall.
The rest of the week starts mild, with Monday seeing highs near 66°F under mostly cloudy skies. Rain increases Tuesday, with highs near 67°F. The chill sets in Thursday, marking the beginning of a colder trend that continues into the weekend.
Prepare for potential power outages and icy conditions in higher elevations as the storm system moves through. Stay updated on changing forecasts and plan accordingly for the week ahead.
